Tips on How To Select a Professional Outdoor Lighting Designer

We’re continuing our conversation with Michael Gotowala of Preferred Properties Landscaping.

More people are investing in lighting to enhance their homes’ look, which calls for landscape designers who really know what they’re doing. As I mentioned in Part 1, low voltage lighting has made it possible for you to create that ‘wow’ effect. It can be achieved by a pro that is creative, knowledgeable and very experienced.

Landscape lighting is a true niche, and the designer you select should have the proper equipment and be professional and passionate about his or her work. Look for a designer that has a vision for your space and is willing to work closely with you to achieve your goals.

Most talented lighting designers are also landscape professionals who can provide a holistic view of your outdoor space. Specifically, designers should have an understanding of how lighting interacts with the architecture as well as with trees, shrubs and plants.

Columns may create elegance during the day but will disappear in the dark if not lighted properly. Walkways lined with colorful flowers have no color during the evening hours. That’s why a skilled lighting designer will need to visit your home multiple times after dark because the space will look entirely different.

So what should you expect from your designer’s first visit? A designer will walk around your property, look out your windows and doors, and search for possible focal points for a dramatic effect. Most reputable companies will even offer a free demonstration by lighting your property with temporary lights to give you an idea of what they are envisioning.

Is your project answering safety concerns or is it strictly for visual appeal? Do you have any garden art you want to be able to see at night? A professional lighting designer will be able to ask the right questions.

The professional you choose should be able to provide light fixtures and timers of proven quality and durability. Fixtures should be able to withstand harsh environments such as rain, sleet, snow and other conditions. Some fixtures made of solid bronze and copper now come with a lifetime guarantee.

Outdoor lighting is growing in popularity among homeowners throughout the county. A common response from many of my customers is “Gosh, I should have done this a long time ago.”
